How Ideas Are Living, Beautiful Beings Of Wonder | Jason Silva

In this video from his talk at PSFK CONFERENCE NYC, Jason Silva shares two of his ‘shots of philosophical expresso’ - an exploration of how technology can quickly manifest our ideas and desires. The filmmaker and futurist rapidly demands that we need to learn to see the word in new ways in order to experience anew the amazement that has always been there.

Quiet: The Power Of Introverts In A World That Can’t Stop Talking

In an increasingly social world, author Susan Cain argues that we undervalue the power of the introvert at our peril. How can organizations ensure that the best ideas dominate, rather than those of the most vocal and assertive people?

I had read about Dale Stephens 2 years ago, talking about his motivation to revamp the current education system. He, like Peter Thiel, is of the belief that conventional learning has failed us and we need a more resourceful, less structured and more current educational system.

Let’s face it: information mediums have become more pervasive; the time taken for mediums like radio, television, internet, youtube, smartphones has reduced learning time by 2x at each juncture. The recent cataclysmic recession is evidence that fundamental systems will constantly change and adaptation to new innovations is necessary. Our current educational systems do not fully encapsulate that. While new systems like global campuses for online universities have been discussed, Dale encourages new students to pursue fellowships rather than degrees - they are more relevant, less expensive and more interesting.

Joe Tree: Creating a Collective Human History

Human history is defined largely by the information our ancestors were able to create and store. But our record of the past is skewed by the powerful or privileged few who were capable of documenting the world around them. We are the first generation to record and share the smallest details of everday life on a massive scale, and the first with an opportunity to create a truly collective human history. But to secure our place in tomorrow’s past, we need to think much more carefully about what we’re doing today.

Consider this our gift to you, the industrious entrepreneur, to build your own empire from the fruits of our fields overabundant in inspiration and awesome sauce.  These ideas are completely open source and free for you to pursue to your heart’s content.  Good luck and Godspeed to you!

  • Pets in a Box – People love pets, but for most people, the novelty wears off quickly.  In the midst of busy lives and changing fashions, most would be pet owners simply never get the satisfaction of pet ownership.  Why not combine the newness of changing fashions with the ease and convenience of subscription commerce?  By sending a new pet in the mail every month, subscribers would get the immediate joy of a cute baby pet, all requisite supplies, and an instruction manual.  At the end of the month, the subscriber can simply send the pet back and get a new one, just like sending and receiving Netflix DVD’s in the mail.

  • App Stores for App Stores – While the number of app stores can be counted on one hand right now, the future of app stores is going to be big.  And what is bigger than having the app store to rule them all?  Using all the latest techniques in SEO and PEO (Pinterest Engine Optimization), a new marketplace can emerge that improves upon the older models by being open, bigger, and giving developers and content providers a fighting chance to get noticed, unlike in those siloed, propriety, and closed app store environments.
  • Social Network for One – The people are too damn many!  That is what folks are saying after connecting with every single person they have ever met in their lives.  Path got a hold of this trend and released the social network for fifty people.  Then recently some enterprising romantics released Between followed by a similar app called Pair that is the social network of two.  But in this navel gazing, me-centric generation we live in, isn’t two even too noisy of a network.  The wave of the future is the social network of yourself, where you can share the most intimate and precious moments of your life with the person you care about most; you.
  • Human Organ Marketplace – Uber broke the rules when launching its taxi service in San Francisco.  Airbnb helps home dwellers skirt hotel occupancy laws in many cities around the globe.  So why can’t some innovative entrepreneurs build the next great marketplace for something that is as important as life and death?  While organ exchange does cross some ethical boundaries and is a little bit of a legal grey area, this is a $39 billion industry ripe for transparency and disruption.  Because is not the fair thing to do is provide market rates to the donors to begin with?
  • Rent the Homeless – If you have ever strolled down the Tenderloin district in San Francisco, the Port Authority in New York City, or anywhere in Buffalo, you soon realize that homelessness is still a major problem in urban communities.  Instead of shipping them off to other cities or herding them into overcrowded shelters, let’s give the homeless an opportunity to earn a living while helping their communities.  While some may say this is exploitation and others may think this is merely a TaskRabbit clone, this is in fact a breakthrough and revolutionary social movement rolled into what is a multi-billion opportunity in the fractional workforce market.  Lending, and getting, a helping hand never felt better!

  • Ending the Thinness Epidemic – America has a problem and it is too many skinny people.  We as a nation have decided that the natural and preferred body type is obese.  When over 60% of the country is overweight and growing, why are people still fighting against the obvious?  People are meant to be fat, and not just in the US, as waistlines expand throughout Europe and even in countries such as China.  Why level up in Fitocracy when we can fatten up in Fatocracy?  Why bother burning calories in FitBit when we can eat up calories with our FatBites.   Stop encouraging people to exercise and eat right, let’s load up on the carbs in this $25 billion industry and enjoy our roly-poly lives to the fullest!
  • Daily Deals for End of Life – While the passing of a loved one is traumatic, it does not have to be expensive.  By creating a market to aggregate and normalize pricing and offerings of burial services, tangential services, and additional funeral expenses, consumers can significantly reduce the costs of this high margin and opaque business.  Furthermore, by providing a global market in services and spaces, a truly transparent market can develop that offers clarity and fairness to burial services and product pricing.  This is a $13 billion industry that is poised for some brilliant entrepreneur to make a killing in.
  • Incubators for Incubators that Incubate – We have all heard of incubators that help start incubators.  They are finding funding, guiding strategy, rounding up mentors, and providing other operational and logistical assistance to these budding incubators.  But who is helping the incubator of incubators identify and train those enterprising incubator founders?  That is where these incu-incubators come in.  Frankly anyone can start a company these days, so it is not much of a feat.  But you know what’s cooler than starting one company?  Getting a bunch of equity from multiple startups without shelling out a lot of cash or taking much responsibility.  And that, my friends, is the mark of a true entrepreneur in this day and age.

TED, the conference dedicated to “Ideas Worth Spreading,” took a step forward in its educational mission today by launching a TEDEd video channel on YouTube. Shorter than the 18-minute TED talks that have racked up 500 million views, these videos feature a combination of talking heads from TED stages and animation (artwork by Fast Company Most Creative Person Sunni Brown, among others) tackling topics like neuroscience and evolution for a high-school-aged audience.

The End of the World Travel Bucket List

This fun little infographic displays the results of a poll of 2000 individuals, showcasing what their bucketlists would look like if the world ended in 2012, based on the old Mayan myth. The most interesting phenomenon for me is that people, as you would have imagined, always mention they would like spend more time with family, discover the world or simply relax.

Why can’t bucketlists be actually implemented? It seems that because we constantly move, we are unable to stand still and, when given an ultimatum, we suddenly discover life’s brakepads. I would like to imagine that the next time this poll is taken, most individuals would say that they did everything they desired, within their means of accomplishment, and all that is left is plain destiny.
